How to Get a Real Street Address for Your Business in Memphis

A bookkeeper came in a few weeks back trying to file her LLC with the state and hit a wall she didn't see coming: Tennessee won't let you use a P.O. Box as your registered address. Not for the LLC filing, not for your registered agent, not for a lot of the other paperwork that comes with running a business. Why a P.O. Box doesn't cut it

P.O. Boxes are fine for a lot of things, but most state filing systems (Tennessee's included) require a physical street address for your business and your registered agent — somewhere a person could theoretically walk up to and knock on the door. A P.O. Box number, by design, isn't that. Banks tend to feel the same way when you're opening a business account. So if you're forming an LLC, applying for a business license, or just tired of your home address showing up on public filings, a P.O. Box alone won't solve it.

What actually works: a real street address through a virtual mailbox

- Bring your IDs. Two forms, one with a photo, same as opening a P.O. Box at the post office. Standard stuff.

- Start using the address. Once your 1583 is on file, the address is live. Update your LLC registration, your bank, your invoices, wherever your old address was living.
